Occupational Therapy to Help You Master Daily Living Skills (ADLs) at Home
Are basic routines like getting washed and dressed, preparing meals, or managing household chores becoming more difficult? Injury, illness, disability, or simply the changes that come with age can create barriers to performing these essential ‘Activities of Daily Living’ (ADLs). Medella Home Physio & OT provides specialist Occupational Therapy support directly in your home across Hampshire and Dorset, focusing on practical solutions to help you maintain your independence and confidence in everyday tasks.
Struggling with Everyday Tasks? OT Can Provide Practical Solutions
Occupational Therapy is uniquely focused on helping people participate in the activities (‘occupations’) that are meaningful to them. When it comes to daily living skills, our goal is to help you find safe and effective ways to manage these tasks yourself, enhancing your autonomy and quality of life.
How Our Home-Based OT Supports Your ADL Independence
Assessing and practising daily living skills is most effective when done in your own environment. That’s why our Occupational Therapists only provide home visits. This allows us to:
- See exactly where and why you might be struggling with a task in your own kitchen, bathroom, or living area.
- Identify specific environmental barriers (e.g., high cupboards, awkward steps, poor lighting).
- Tailor strategies and practice techniques using your own furniture, layout, and equipment.
- Recommend adaptations or equipment specifically suited to your home.
- Work collaboratively with you (and your family/carers) in the setting where you need to succeed.
What Does OT for Daily Living Skills Involve?
Our Occupational Therapist will start with a conversation and observation to understand your priorities and the specific difficulties you’re facing. Interventions are practical and tailored, and may include:
- Task Analysis: Breaking down difficult activities into manageable steps.
- Teaching New Techniques: Showing you different, often easier or safer, ways to perform tasks (e.g., one-handed dressing techniques, energy-saving methods for cooking).
- Adaptive Equipment Recommendations & Training: Identifying and teaching you how to use helpful gadgets and aids (e.g., long-handled sponges, button hooks, adapted cutlery, kettle tippers, sock aids, grabbers, perching stools).
- Energy Conservation Strategies: Helping you pace yourself and manage fatigue during daily routines.
- Cognitive Strategies: Using prompts, checklists, or routines to help if memory or planning difficulties are impacting ADLs.
- Minor Adaptation Advice: Suggesting simple changes to your environment (e.g., rearranging cupboards, improving lighting).
- Building Confidence: Providing encouragement and support as you practise and regain skills.
What are Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)?
‘Activities of Daily Living’ is a term used to describe the essential tasks we all need or want to do day-to-day. They are often broken down into two key areas, both of which our Occupational Therapists can help with:
- Personal ADLs (PADLs): These are the fundamental self-care tasks, such as:
- Washing and bathing
- Dressing and undressing
- Toileting and continence management
- Personal grooming (e.g., brushing teeth, hair care)
- Feeding yourself
- Moving around your home (e.g., getting in/out of bed or chairs) related to these tasks.
- Instrumental ADLs (IADLs): These are slightly more complex tasks often required for independent living within the community, such as:
- Preparing drinks and meals
- Basic cleaning and housework
- Shopping
- Managing medications
- Using the telephone or other communication devices
- Managing finances (e.g., paying bills)
- Accessing transport and the local community.
Who Can Benefit from ADL Occupational Therapy?
Difficulties with daily living skills can arise for many reasons. Our service can benefit:
- Older adults experiencing age-related functional decline or frailty.
- Individuals recovering from a stroke, brain injury, or other neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s, MS).
- People living with arthritis or persistent pain impacting function.
- Patients recovering from surgery (e.g., hip/knee replacement, cardiac surgery).
