Post-Surgery Rehabilitation at Home
Leaving the hospital after a major operation like a hip or knee replacement is a huge relief, but it can also feel overwhelming. You may have been discharged with a generic sheet of exercises and a pair of crutches, leaving you with unanswered questions: “Am I walking correctly?” “Is this pain normal?” “How do I manage the stairs?”
Recovery requires consistent, expert support. The first few weeks post-surgery are critical for regaining your full range of movement. Our specialist home-visit service bridges the gap between hospital discharge and independence, ensuring you recover safely in your own environment.
Specialist Rehabilitation Programmes
Our multi-disciplinary team delivers condition-specific protocols, ensuring your recovery is guided by therapists with deep expertise in your exact procedure. We tailor our approach to meet the specific clinical requirements of the surgeries below.
Hip Replacement Rehabilitation
Dedicated home physiotherapist and occupational therapist to manage movement precautions, build confidence, and maximise your new joint’s mobility.
Knee Replacement Rehabilitation
Intensive, early intervention physiotherapy is crucial to avoid stiffness and regain maximum flexion after a total or partial knee replacement.
Spinal Surgery Rehabilitation
Safe, controlled mobilisation following back surgery (fusion, laminectomy, discectomy) to build core stability and restore confidence.
Shoulder Surgery Rehabilitation
Recovery for rotator cuff repair or shoulder replacement focuses on gentle, protected range-of-movement and restoring safe, functional arm strength.
The “Whole Person” Approach to Recovery
Successful rehabilitation requires more than just bending a joint; it requires a safe home environment and the confidence to move within it. Uniquely, Medella combines expert Physiotherapy to restore your strength with Occupational Therapy to ensure you can wash, dress, and manage daily tasks safely while you heal.
The Physiotherapy Role
Our Physios provide hands-on treatment and clinical guidance to restore mobility.
- Joint Mobilisation: Manual therapy techniques to reduce stiffness and manage pain (vital for Knee Replacements).
- Gait Re-education: Professional coaching to correct your walking pattern and reduce reliance on walking aids.
- Muscle Reconditioning: Targeted exercises to rebuild strength in muscles that may have weakened prior to surgery.
- Scar Management: Advice and massage techniques to keep surgical tissue flexible and comfortable.
The Occupational Therapy Role
Our OTs focus on your safety, home environment, and daily independence.
- Home Safety Assessment: Identifying trip hazards and adjusting furniture heights to protect your new joint.
- Equipment Prescriptions: Recommending correct aids such as raised toilet seats, perching stools, or bed levers.
- Energy Pacing: Practical strategies to manage the significant fatigue that often follows major anaesthetic and surgery.
- Return to Routine: A graded plan to get you back to hobbies, kitchen tasks, and driving safely.
Why rehab at home accelerates recovery
Driving to a clinic with a fresh surgical wound and a stiff joint is exhausting and often painful. It uses up the energy you need for your actual exercises. By coming to you, we save your energy for what matters: your recovery. Furthermore, we can practice the things you actually need to do – like climbing your stairs, getting in and out of your bed, and sitting comfortably in your armchair. This functional approach typically leads to a faster, safer return to independence.

When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
Ideally, as soon as you are discharged from the hospital. The first 6-12 weeks are the “golden window” for regaining range of motion, especially for knee replacements. Early intervention prevents stiffness from setting in and ensures you don’t develop bad walking habits.
Do you treat NHS patients?
We are a private service, meaning we are separate from the NHS. However, many of our clients use us to “top up” their NHS care, or because they need more frequent visits than the NHS can provide. We are happy to coordinate with your NHS discharge team.
Will the treatment hurt?
Post-surgical rehab requires some hard work, and it can be uncomfortable to move a stiff joint. However, we never force pain. Our goal is to manage your pain while gently pushing your progress. We will always work within your tolerance levels.
Which areas do you visit?
We provide post-operative rehabilitation at home across Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire. This includes Ringwood, Bournemouth, Poole, Southampton, Salisbury, and the surrounding villages.
